Without doubts, public transport of London is legendary; it’s so easy to find a lot of historical information about it in the books and newspapers. It is famous all over the world for its black taxi cabs, red double-decker buses, modern lines of trams, DLR railways, and the oldest subway in Europe. The length of streets and roads in London is nearly 13,600 km, bus routes – 3,700 km, metro lines – 330 km, but it doesn’t stop citizens and tourists to get easy from one part of the city to another.
Double-decker red buses can be called the landmark of London. This is an easy, fast and very convenient means of transport; this is the most pleasant way of travelling around the city, during which you can still admire the places of interest. When you see these rich red buses, you bring back to memory all the movies in which you saw them. The passenger fare is the same in all the municipal buses. But remember, tickets must be purchased beforehand, as conductors and drivers do not sell tickets any longer. Please, note that ticket kiosks at bus stops do not give change.
According to the points of view of many citizens of London, it is really easy to use the subway which is often called the “tube”. The London Underground network includes both ground and underground lines with the total length of 400 km, including 268 stations. There is an information board on each platform and each railway carriage that informs passengers about the lines route and how to get quickly and easy to the place of destination.
The Docklands Light Railway line can be considered as another integral part of the transport system.These lines are indicated in the diagram of the London Underground; the same rules and passenger tickets, as in the subway, are used here. A distinctive feature of the DLR is that there are no drivers, a computer works instead.
If you want to catch a cab in London, you may easy raise your hand and show that you need to be taken by this means of transport. A turned on yellow light means that the cab is ready to drive you. It is interesting to know that the cost increases, if there’re several passengers or you go at night time.
If you want to know more about historical side of the public transport in London, then don’t forget to visit the London Transport Museum. It is easy to buy tickets at the entrance. Children visit it for free, but adults will have to pay 15 pounds. The museum is open daily from 10:00 am to 18:00 pm. The Victorian building of the museum served as a flower and vegetable market in 1871 and was rebuilt to the transport museum in 1980. It’s easy to see that a collection of museum will be interesting both for children and their parents; there’re numerous samples of buses, trolleybuses, trams and trains of the 19th and 20th centuries. It is so easy to get inside of different buses and make marvelous photos. The most unique thing is that this museum has the most complete collection of transport in the world.
